Arguably South Africa’s most scenic tourist route, Route 62 transports visitors inland between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), making it the ideal complement to a Garden Route holiday. The route winds through vineyards, over mountain passes and through charming country towns. Route 62 in South Africa is renowned for award-winning wines paired with fabulous cuisine, old school hospitality and a family-friendly range of activities.

Route 62

Route 62 in South Africa spans a distance of 850 kilometres between the coastal cities of Cape Town and Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), offering a scenic inland alternative to the main N2 highway.

Its position also makes it an ideal return route for those exploring the more coastal Garden Route.

Also known as The Wine Route, Route 62 begins in Cape Town, heading into the mountains where it passes through the wine-growing areas of Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Robertson and the Klein Karoo.

From there, it continues across mountainous terrain, passing through quaint villages, each with its distinctive character and offerings, separated by vast semi-arid plains.

The journey celebrates the freedom of the open road, offering glimpses of small-town charm and untrammelled expanses of wilderness.

This makes it ideal for travellers seeking beauty, culture and something unique and well off the beaten path.

Far more than just a drive from A to B, it is about the discoveries made along the way, both the things you’ll see and the moments of precious tranquillity you’ll experience.

While by day the dome of the sky seems impossibly blue, by night it is transformed into a glittering marvel seldom seen by city dwellers.

Here, the shape and texture of the land seem to change with each passing kilometre.

From the smooth sandstone formations near Montagu to the unbelievable Cape Fold mountains, every twist and turn in the road reveals a panorama more spectacular than the last.

You’ll visit quirky villages and towns known for their hot springs, art scene and historic architecture. You’ll grab meals in funky cafés and ponder roadside artworks in the middle of nowhere.

Here, random becomes a purpose in itself, a reminder that life is to be enjoyed. And, the route offers many ways to enjoy it, with activities galore, no matter your interest or age.

For a more immersive experience, there are hiking and mountain bike trails galore, while ziplines and canopy tours are sure to get the heart racing.

If you’re looking to slow down the pace and explore the cultural aspects of the region, there are dozens of art galleries, several museums and numerous examples of historic architecture. In the western reaches, connoisseurs will love wine-tasting at any of the award-winning vineyards.

In keeping with the fine wines and ports of the country’s longest wine route, the gastronomic experience is as varied as the views.

You’ll find everything from retro diners loved by kids of all ages; to farm stall treats, traditional South African meals and fine dining, all delivered with the trademark hospitality for which the area is renowned.

The accommodation along the route is equally diverse — ranging from stylish guesthouses and historic inns to traditional farm stays and luxury lodges.

Whether road-tripping across the country or exploring the Klein Karoo in depth, Route 62 is more than just a road; it’s a journey into the soul of South Africa.
