Wild Coast Hiking Trail

Experience hiking through South Africa's unspoiled coastal wilderness

Wild Coast Hiking Tours

The Wild Coast hiking trails are among South Africa’s most rewarding and untouched adventures — and among the least visited.

Stretching along the rugged Indian Ocean coastline of the Eastern Cape Province, the Wild Coast has a rare, unhurried beauty and a deeply relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart from anywhere else in the country.

Expect rolling grassy hills dotted with ancient coastal forests, colourful Xhosa homesteads, river estuaries, and some of the continent’s most pristine and untouched beaches.

Highlights include the coastal path to the Msikaba Estuary, the dramatic Waterfall Bluff, where an 80-metre waterfall plunges directly into the Indian Ocean, the striking Cathedral Rock, shipwrecks, and meeting local Xhosa communities along the way.

Join a guided Wild Coast hiking tour, and we will handle the details, so you can just enjoy the walks.

What can you expect on a Wild Coast hiking tour?

Far from the tourist trail, the Wild Coast hiking trails offer pristine beaches, forests, and some of the most scenically dramatic and unspoiled hiking in South Africa.

The Wild Coast stretches along the Eastern Cape Province’s coastline from Mzamba, just south of Port Edward, all the way to East London; as a result, Wild Coast hiking tours typically begin and conclude in nearby Durban

Throughout the hike, you will be led by an expert local guide who will share their deep knowledge of the landscape, Xhosa culture, and coastal ecology — giving you an insight far beyond anything a guidebook can offer.

A Wild Coast hiking tour also pairs beautifully with our other South African adventures.

You might hike the Drakensberg Mountains as part of our Hiking South Africa: Mountains and Wildlife tour, which finishes in Durban, before continuing on to the Wild Coast.

Alternatively, you could include a safari or a Garden Route tour in your itinerary.

Which routes can I take on a Wild Coast hiking tour?

The Pondoland coastline is one of South Africa’s most remote and least-explored stretches of shoreline — and its trails reflect that.

Trails wind along rugged cliffs, river mouths, and coastal hills, with the Indian Ocean as a constant companion.

Among the most rewarding routes is the coastal path to the Msikaba Estuary, a relatively flat trail that traces a wild and romantically beautiful shoreline, passing the wreck site of the legendary East Indiaman Grosvenor, which sank in 1782.

Further south, the Wild Coast hiking trail to Mbotyi passes two of the coast’s most iconic landmarks: Waterfall Bluff, an 80-metre waterfall that plunges directly into the ocean, and Cathedral Rock, a solitary pinnacle of stone surrounded entirely by sea.

What does a typical day on a Wild Coast hiking tour look like?

No two days on the Wild Coast are quite the same, but they all share a certain rhythm.

Mornings start with a hearty breakfast before your guide sets the scene for the trail ahead. While your luggage goes ahead, you carry a light bag with the essentials.

Daily hikes range from 12 to 23 km, but the focus remains on experience rather than effort; your guide sets a pace that works for everyone.

As you set off, rolling green hills and valleys, stretches of deserted beach, encounters with local Xhosa communities, and breathtaking views all unfold before you.

This is not a race, it’s a chance to disconnect, breathe, and truly appreciate one of South Africa’s great wilderness areas.

By late afternoon, a welcoming lodge, a cold drink, and a good meal mark the perfect end to another unforgettable day on the trail.

When is the best time to hike on the Wild Coast?

The Wild Coast can be hiked year-round, but choosing the right season makes a real difference.

The driest and most reliable months for hiking run from May (autumn) through to September (early spring), covering the entire South African winter. Trails are firm, and mild temperatures (≈20°C/68°F) make for comfortable conditions.

September to October (spring) is widely considered the sweet spot: dry, warm, and alive with birdlife and wildflowers along the coastal path.

Rainfall peaks between November and March (summer), making trails muddy and conditions more challenging. This is worth keeping in mind when planning your dates.

If you are still unsure, speak with one of our Travel Experts to find the best time for you.

How fit do I need to be for a Wild Coast hiking tour?

The Wild Coast hiking trails are rated moderate to challenging — not technically difficult, but not a casual stroll either.

Daily distances on our tour range from 12 to 23 km, which is on the higher end for coastal hiking, and the terrain is more varied than many hikers expect.

Rather than flat beach walking, you’ll be navigating coastal hills, rocky headlands, indigenous forest, and stretches of soft sand.

If you can comfortably walk for six to eight hours at a moderate pace, you’ll be well-suited to this tour.

No prior hiking experience is necessary, but some regular walking or light exercise in the weeks beforehand will make a noticeable difference.

Guides set a relaxed and manageable pace, and the focus is always on enjoyment over endurance.

Other things to know before you go

Extend your adventure

Having come this far, it would be a shame not to discover more of South Africa. You can always talk with a Travel Expert about planning a longer itinerary around your hike.

A Wild Coast hiking tour pairs beautifully with a Big Five safari, a few days exploring the Cape Winelands, the Garden Route or Cape Town.

Alternatively, explore Namibia, Botswana, Tanzania, and Kenya with our sister companies.

What to pack

Once you book, we’ll send you a comprehensive packing list covering everything from footwear to sun protection; however, the golden rule on the Wild Coast is to pack light.

Connectivity

Mobile signal on the Wild Coast is limited, and largely non-existent on the trail. Consider it a feature, not a bug.

Travel insurance

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers hiking activities, emergency evacuation, and repatriation before your departure.
