Wilderness – Garden Route

Wilderness is situated just a stone’s throw from the city of George, in South Africa’s beloved Garden Route. Straddling the N2 highway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), it is conveniently located for those travelling along the route.

While there is much to do in the town, it also serves as an excellent base from which to explore the western Garden Route.

This peaceful village is situated within the Wilderness Section of the Garden Route National Park, which covers an area of 1,210 square kilometers (470 square miles). Ideal for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, the park contains five lakes and a winding river, surrounded by indigenous forest and fynbos.

These habitats are home to a pleasing diversity of forest and waterbirds, with 262 species recorded. Meanwhile, from the beach, you have an excellent chance of spotting surfing dolphins or breaching whales during winter.

Activity-wise, there is no shortage of options to keep visitors entertained. Of course, with so much water around, many of these invite exploring the waterways. At 9 kilometres, Wilderness Beach is a great place for long walks or soaking up the sun in solitude.

A word of caution, though, strong currents exist, so only swim where there are lifeguards on duty. For swimming, we recommend going to nearby Victoria Bay or Sedgefield. Surf lessons by professional instructors are available.

To explore the river and lakes, there are opportunities for canoeing, boating and other watersports. These can be done on your own or in the company of a knowledgeable guide.

The forest is crisscrossed with a number of trails that will take you through galleries of ancient trees and viewpoints with spectacular views. You’ll also find plenty of opportunities for trail running and mountain biking.  There are several golf courses within easy reach.

Kids of all ages can go horse riding in Wilderness in South Africa. While the challenge of an exciting quadbike trail, might be more suited to older children. For an adrenaline boost, try tandem paragliding.

Of course, no holiday destination is complete without a selection of dining options. Here, too, Wilderness offers a pleasing selection. There are several excellent restaurants and cafés, serving freshly made dishes.

For added variety, visit the Wild Oats Farmers Market in nearby Sedgefield on Saturdays.
