This 14-day 4×4 self-drive tour in South Africa and Namibia takes you from Cape Town north along South Africa’s remote west coast into Namibia, through vast landscapes and deserts, ending in Windhoek.

You’ll drive a fully equipped 4×4 in a small convoy of up to six vehicles, led by an expert guide and support team in a separate vehicle.

Small group Guided Self-drive Tour | minimum 8, maximum 12 people

This wild adventure begins in Cape Town and concludes in Windhoek, Namibia.

The guided self-drive Cape Town to Namibia journey starts with a short drive north to the Atlantis Dunes for an off-road driving course, finishing the day in Paternoster Place, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach.

Over the next five days, you’ll travel South Africa’s west coast, passing Eland’s Bay, Lamberts Bay, Namaqua National Park and at Hondeklip Bay you’ll take a private guided tour of the coastline’s shipwrecks.

The trip continues to Alexander Bay, where the Orange River meets the Atlantic Ocean, marking the border between South Africa and Namibia. You’ll spend time here exploring the Richtersveld National Park – a highlight of the tour.

You’ll cross into Namibia on the Ochiha Ferry and proceed to the Fish River Canyon.

Afterwards, explore the Namib Desert to visit Walvis Bay, Solitaire, Kuiseb Canyon, Conception Bay, and the wrecks of the Eduard Bohlen and the Shawnee.

The penultimate stop is the coastal town of Swakopmund, where you can enjoy activities such as sandboarding, quad biking, skydiving, a boat cruise, or a desert tour.

The final day’s drive takes you to Windhoek, where you can fly home or join another tour.

Today marks the start of your guided self-drive Cape Town to Namibia tour – an exhilarating adventure. We gather to sign out our vehicles, filled with anticipation for the journey ahead!

Leaving the vibrant city of Cape Town behind, we’ll set our sights on the stunning Atlantis Dunes, where the golden sands await us for an exciting practical training session in sand driving techniques. Here, we’ll push our vehicles to their limits, mastering the art of navigating the dunes and soaking in the breathtaking landscape around us.

After testing our skills, we’ll take a well-deserved lunch break amid the dunes, relishing the beauty of our surroundings.

Refreshed and invigorated, we’ll continue our journey to the charming coastal village of Paternoster, where the rhythmic sound of waves and the scent of the sea will welcome us. Get ready for a delightful seaside experience that promises to enchant and inspire.

Dinner will be at a local restaurant (at your own expense).

After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll set off on an adventure that takes us north along the breathtaking West Coast of South Africa.

As we pass through the picturesque towns of Eland’s Bay and Lamberts Bay, the stunning landscapes will unfold before us, culminating in the wild beauty of Namaqua National Park on our journey to Hondeklip Bay.

Nestled in this charming fishing village, we’ll spend the next two nights soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and the rhythm of the sea.

The following morning promises to be unforgettable as we embark on a private guided tour of the coastline’s hauntingly beautiful shipwrecks. Each wreck tells a story of adventure and mystery, and we’ll explore these fascinating relics against the backdrop of the dramatic ocean.

After a restful night and a hearty breakfast, we’ll embark on an exhilarating journey as we cross the Orange River via the Octha Ferry, leaving behind the tranquil waters and heading east along the riverbanks to Aussenkehr. The vibrant landscapes will unfold around us, each bend revealing the beauty of southern Namibia.

Once we bid farewell to the river, we’ll set our sights on Hobas and the majestic Fish River Canyon. This stunning natural wonder awaits, and we’ll spend the afternoon exploring its dramatic edges, marvelling at the breathtaking views that stretch endlessly before us.

As the sun begins to set, the canyon will transform into a canvas of vibrant colours, a spectacle that will leave us in awe.

We’ll return to Hobas for a memorable dinner under the stars, the vast Namibian sky enveloping us in its beauty. It’s a perfect way to cap off a day filled with adventure, connection, and the unforgettable charm of southern Namibia!

After a rejuvenating night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, we’ll set out on an exhilarating journey into the heart of the Namib Desert.

We arrive at the campsite at a local lodge in the late afternoon and meet up with our local guide, who will take us through the desert to Walvis Bay.

On Day 8, we head into the desert, stopping in Solitaire, where we refill our vehicles.

Over the next 3 days, you visit the Kuiseb Canyon, Conception Bay and the wrecks of the Eduard Bohlen and Shawnee. Desert wildlife, spectacular scenery, untouched beaches, miles of sand-driving and shipwrecks are some of the attractions along the way. This is a true highlight on your 4×4 self-drive tour in South Africa and Namibia.

Travelling this stretch of the Namib Desert is a once-in-a-lifetime journey that only very few people get to experience. The area is not open to the public, and only special permit holders can experience this wilderness area.
