Oudtshoorn

The town of Oudtshoorn lies in a semi-arid Little Karoo valley, at the base of the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains. This unique town is renowned for its rich cultural history, fascinating places of interest and dramatic landscapes, offering an authentic South African experience.

Oudtshoorn is located slightly off two major South African tourist routes: the inland Route 62 and the coastal Garden Route, making it the perfect gateway to both.

Oudtshoorn was once known as the “Feather Capital of the World”, owing to its flourishing ostrich feather industry in the 19th century. To this day, its ostrich farming heritage remains a proud part of its history.

Travellers can visit working ostrich farms to learn about the town’s history and these curious, tall birds.

Another highlight that should not be missed is the Cango Caves, one of South Africa’s most jaw-dropping natural wonders.

Within these ancient limestone chambers, estimated to be over 20 million years old, you’ll find towering stalagmites and intricate structures whose formations are brilliantly explained on guided tours in the winding passageways beneath the Swartberg Mountains.

For self-drive visitors, the traverse of the iconic Swartberg Pass is not to be missed.

Considered one of the most scenic drives in the world, the pass was built in the 1880s and features stone-buttressed switchbacks that claw up the mountainside, rewarding visitors with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Along the way, nature lovers and hikers can roam trails through the endemic fynbos floral kingdom, while keeping a lookout for rare, cryptically marked succulents. Combined, these are a feast for the eyes of photographers and road-trippers.

Highly recommended, meerkat safaris offer an unforgettable early morning experience in the company of these curious mongooses.

Waiting quietly by their burrow entrance, you’ll be enchanted as they emerge to warm themselves in the sun, occasionally using their audience as vantage points to scan for danger.

This activity has strict age restrictions, so ask your travel expert if you are traveling with children.

Oudtshoorn itself exudes old-world charm. Well-preserved Victorian and Cape Dutch architecture, hospitable locals and a relaxed pace of life are the order of the day.

The town has a pleasing selection of accommodation options. Choose between a host of owner-run guesthouses, boutique hotels, farm stays and luxury lodges.

Here, you’ll find you’re genuinely welcome, whether travelling alone or as a family.

In the town centre, you’ll find numerous galleries, cosy cafés and restaurants serving Karoo-inspired cuisine. The region is renowned for its tender lamb and soulful artisanal treats.

Adding to the culinary experience, wine and port lovers are encouraged to visit the estates near Calitzdorp.

For travellers from across the globe, Oudtshoorn offers a refreshingly different experience: endless plains sweeping rise into towering ragged peaks and culturally rooted experiences far from the crowds.

These make it ideal for those seeking natural beauty, authentic hospitality and an all-round meaningful experience.
